Become a New to Curtin mentor

I didn’t know what to expect as a mentor, but I have certainly gained valuable and transferable skills from the program. Communication and adaptation, particularly as information is constantly updated, has been important. Whilst isolated at home, being a part of the New to Curtin Mentor program has made me feel more connected to the Curtin community.

It allows students to take on a position of leadership which will grant them with the opportunity to further develop skills such as self-awareness, effective communications, utilising technology (especially this semester given the circumstances) and organisation. It is not only an opportunity to get involved within the Curtin community and assist others in successfully transitioning into uni life, but it is also a wonderful opportunity for self-growth and personal development.

I really enjoyed the experience. It bought me much joy when a mentee emailed back saying I’d been helpful or that some such service or advice really worked for them. The whole experience made me feel part of something that is greater than myself, which has been a huge reward in itself.

I had the ability to give back and support new students just like I was supported and thus I want to continue to do that. To top it off, I have quite enjoyed being a New to Curtin Mentor and have felt a personal and professional growth. Therefore, I would like to be a Mentor again in the future.

It was a very rewarding experience knowing that I am able to provide help for those who need it in first year of university. Since my previous mentor gave me so much hope and help while I was in first year, it really inspired me to do the same and I am glad I did
